Challenge: Shame

Shame is associated with not measuring up or feeling unworthy. While shame can be felt by anyone at any time, it cannot always be easily shrugged off. Those individuals who experienced shame as a primal wound are spiritually challenge by it. Humiliation is often the triggering event and self-hate the resulting behavior. It is a wound of misperception and is most often linked to dominate visual individuals. Eating disorders are visual misperceptions of one's own body and a means for avoiding the pain of shame.

Transcending shame focuses on developing empathy. Developing compassion for one's own self and others is key. To transcend shame is to realize that we are all human and we all make mistakes. Failing to live up to unrealistic expectations is normal. Choosing to honor oneself, choosing to forgive oneself, choosing to find oneself worthy in spite of limitations, is the salve to heal shame.

Challenge: Fear

Fear has many layers and many causes. Fears can become all consuming and take on a life of their own. For some, fear is a gnawing angst that can only be subdued but never conquered. Our survival mechanism is often fully engaged whenever fear is present. The response to fear is not to engage and take flight or to freeze and stay inside our comfort zone or to face our fear and fight. Acting fearless and demonstrating courage is something we all admire. We also have a collective response to fear. We share our fear as a way to insulate ourselves from the environment or to bond with others. Many a Hollywood plot is made of a tribe fighting over strategies in response to fear.

Fear is not something that can be conquered, it must be transcended. Fear cannot be conquered by the eg, that is playing the ego's own game, control or conquer. Transcending fear is arriving at a place of awareness and choice. Awareness that the fear is present, in the moment, and choosing not to be driven by it. Having a strong spiritual center can alleviate the anxiety that comes from fear. A spiritual center often comes from a spiritual practice, a spiritual tribe, or the bonding of a loving family.

Challenge: Guilt

Guilt is a method for ascribing blame or controlling another's behavior. It usually partners with a strong should-monster, called the Universal Human Paradigm. The underlying archetype is the Judge and the mantra is that someone or something is always broken. By avoiding blame we are vindicated and our ego survives another day. By placing blame elsewhere we feel superior and entitled. Guilt is often a challenge for dominant auditory individuals with an external locus of control. The primarily wound is usually around not being heard. Survival strategies may focus on avoidance.

Transcending guilt requires forgiveness. Either to forgive oneself or another. It requires confronting the Judge archetype and moving beyond black and white thinking, either guilty or not guilty. It is realizing that truth often lives in a context. It is about letting go of the game, of winning and loosing. Transcending guilt can be especially difficult for individuals who use it as a means to motivate themselves. New approaches for achieving success may need to be employed.

Challenge:

Desire (Greed)

Desire can be healthy or unhealthy. Healthy desire is grounded hope. It is believing oneself worthy and working towards realistic goals. Unhealthy desire manifests as hedonistic tendencies, like addiction. We seek a fix for what is missing on the inside. Too often the chase is all that matters, not the actual prize. Winning at all costs can become an obsession. One can never get enough. Or, we can become addicted to a promise which is never fulfilled. With unhealthy desire, one is enslaved to a craving and self-denial can become all consuming. Greed is out of balance desire.

Transcending desire is often about reconnecting with oneself. Self-acceptance and realizing that one is whole and complete is paramount. All the dollars in the world cannot fill an empty well. Dominant kinesthetic individuals are sometimes challenged with the balance between hedonist and epicurean tendencies. A Hedonist is driven by pleasure and an Epicurean is driven by a love of life. The challenge is balance and discipline.

Challenge: Hate

Hate is condemning someone as unworthy. Objectified hate has become a serious problem in our society today. Labeling is the first step in hate, shifting the perception of the individual from a human being to something less than human. The ego can jump from subject to object in the flash of an eye. Objects have no emotions, receive no empathy and are therefore easy to hate.

Transcending hate involves shifting perceptions back from object to subject. Seeing the hated individual as a human being is the first step. Overcoming despair of what-was or what-is by restoring hope is an important second step in the healing process. Realizing it is possible to hate the behavior and not the individual can be liberating. Forgiveness is a process that works for some. Forgiving the individual for making the mistake while not condoning the action can be a reasonable compromise.
